Vibrant Silicon Valley tech hub with diverse neighborhoods
Located between the Santa Cruz Mountains and San Francisco Bay, in the heart of Silicon Valley, sits Mountain View. From its earliest days as Native American Ohlone land to its days of agricultural nirvana to the Silicon Valley tech boom, Mountain View has hosted some profound and memorable history.
In 1842, over 8,000 acres of land, now encompassing most of present-day Mountain View, was granted to the Castro family by the Mexican government. The family named their first property Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas and went on to own several other small land grants as well.
In 1849, Mountain View began its use as a stagecoach stop between San Jose and San Francisco. A school, a hotel, a saloon, a blacksmith shop and several other small businesses were built along what is now El Camino Real. When the railroad was built in 1864, the center of town shifted to Castro Street, which is near the train tracks. Over time this area grew with boutiques, restaurants, cafes and bars and was named Downtown.
Today, Mountain View is a diverse community that is known for its pioneering tech development and serves as headquarters to high-tech companies Google, Intuit and Symantec. Mountain View prides itself on providing superb public services and facilities to meet its people's needs in a caring manner. One incredible perk of being a neighbor to Google’s campus is free city-wide WiFi provided by the company. Another wonderful service that Mountain View offers is its Bike Share program. As one of five Bay Area cities participating in a pilot bike share program where members check out a bike from a network of automated bike stations, ride to a destination and return the bike to a different station, this system offers a great alternative to cars or mass transit and serves as a fantastic way to take advantage of the Bay Area's cultivated bike paths.
Mountain View is also known for being home to El Camino Hospital, which is a state-of-the-art building that Popular Science Magazine has declared the “most technologically advanced in the world”. El Camino has received such honor thanks to its robots that carry supplies and assist surgeons, the palm scanners used for patient registration and the infection-resistant bedside computers. El Camino Hospital was the first hospital in the country to introduce electronic medical records and the technology evolution has not stopped since. The hospital is also equipped for seismic activity, making it a safe place to be in case of an earthquake.
Mountain View maintains favorable public education and safety records and is considered one of the best places to live in the bay area.
